This is a skill-oriented course to provide hands-on practice and complete project execution work in poultry farming. They will learn about day-to-day farm management, disease management, feeding management, identification of different breeds and sexes, clean egg production and Economic traits of Poultry.

Course Objectives:

The objectives of this subject are:

  • Seeing and doing is the key to success of any entrepreneurship on live animals and birds – being the main focus of skill course.
  • To develop the overall practical skill/knowledge on poultry in an operational farm for more profit management, feed requirements, etc.
  • To make the students of various professional well versed in their practical skills starting from hatching of chicks to the egg production stage.
  • To develop self-confidence among students from various professional to go for entrepreneurship on poultry.

After completing this program-

  • The students having rigorous practical experience in an organized institutional poultry farm for a period of 4-5 months, became self-confident to go for entrepreneurship on poultry.
  • Be a good advisor, planner, and policymaker.
  • Development of project involving small scale industries on poultry became easier.
  • Economics of the farm can be better assessed by these professionals involved in skill courses on poultry.
  • Can join any poultry farm and can manage independently.
  • Can become an entrepreneur in the related field

Learning Record:

The trainee will submit a Practice/Project/Learning record after each class/session.

Assessment Process:

  • The assessment agencies should have an expert to conduct assessment NOS wise and every trainee should score a minimum of 70% in the overall assessment.
  • The assessment of the theory/knowledge will be based on a written test/viva-voce or both while the skill test shall be hands-on practical.

Course Syllabus/Contents:

All Module I
  • Skills of identifying good layer and broiler breeds and poultry – General and specific body features at native poultry – features pattern, lamb pattern egg shape and colour etc.
  • Layout of poultry houses for meat type breeds and egg type breeds, planning and construction of poultry houses in deep litter system and cage system of rearing floor space, requirement, bedding material preparation etc.
  • Skills of cleaning of poultry layers in case of deep litter system for broiler and layers- partial replacement of litter material in case of layer birds, sterilization techniques of littering material, feeders and water fountain etc.
  • Feeding & watering techniques/skills of broiler birds and layer birds, skills of controlling feed loss in poultry without affecting growth in case of broiler birds.
  • Uses of different types of feeder and water feeder- long feeder, hanging feeders, nipple watering etc. Tray feeding in case of medium chicks to 1week of age.
  • Skills of preparation of breeding houses for new born/day old chicks, monitoring temperature and humidity in case of better of boarders in different seasons, skills of protecting the chicks from predators. Maintaining sanitation in chick houses.
  • Transfer technique in case of layer and broiler birds from broiler houses to grower houses, transfer techniques incubator and hatchery, sterilization and cleanliness of the incubator hatches etc. maintaining cleanliness of hatching eggs etc.
  • Skills of overall/management of broiler birds/layer birds- time of feeding workers amount of feed and water required of different stages.
  • Practical skills of culling of unproductive and egg laying birds for more economic return, skills of collection of eggs to prevent breakage of eggs, care of eggs in post laying period, cleanliness and preservation till marketing.
  • Computation techniques for preservation and poultry feeds for boilers and layers, preparation skills of poultry ration, different ingredients, preservative techniques, low cost technology etc.
  • Skills of vaccinating the chicks and growing birds against common diseases. Identifying the diseased birds in poultry farms. Knowing skills of healthy symptoms, Skills of nasal inoculation, feather pricking and administrative of vaccinating material and medication.
  • Skills of formulating an ideal plan/ scheme of layer unit for rural youth for maximum profit.
